Lockout Tagout implementation step by step

LOTO: from planning to training

Aug. 6, 2024

Discover the key steps for implementing a Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) program that ensures workplace safety while reducing accidents and costs.

What is Lockout Tagout (LOTO)?

Lockout Tagout is a process that effectively prevents unexpected start-ups and release of dangerous energies or substances during maintenance, stops, cleaning, control and other interventions on work equipment and in electrical and mechanical installations.

Why implement a Lockout/Tagout program?

An effective LOTO program has immediate impact on the whole organization:

  • reduce the number of injuries & fatalities,

  • reduce the number and duration of costly downtimes,

  • improve productivity,

  • reduce and better control the insurance and compensation fees,

  • strengthen workers’ skills and commitment,

  • improve company’s brand image: socially responsible.

4 main steps in implementing an efficient LOTO program:

1. Create energy control (LOTO) policy & procedures

The first step is to develop and document a lockout policy that identifies in detail the purpose, scope, responsibilities and procedures of the program. It is created by Nexum professionals in close cooperation with the company’s responsible employees to make it as easy and efficient as possible, taking in regard all the company’s specifics.

2. Identification of energy control points

In this step we identify all energy control points on the chosen work equipment, which includes all energy isolating valves, switches, breakers, plugs etc., to create some sample machine-specific procedures. Again, this is done in close cooperation with experienced employees in the company.

3. Equip authorised employees with the proper lockout tools and warning devices

A list of needed equipment is created, based on energy control points inspection and company policy that was created in the first step. Nexum stocks and delivers the widest range of LOTO devices on the market.

4. Train employees and promote awareness of safe work practices

Nexum offers customized LOTO trainings with Jurij Žvab which can be done live by the customer or in Nexum, via online meetings and individually online for the purposes of regular refreshment trainings. Nexum also provides all sorts of customised posters, shadow boards, documents and any other tools that make LOTO implementations successful.
